Job Description

Objective

Essential Functions

Assist with the clinical instruction of SVM students in Junior Surgery and Anesthesia Lab (JSAL-SAMS 527) and in a variety of clinical courses, including Introduction to Surgical Skills (SAMS 514) and Veterinary Physical Diagnosis.

Instructional Activities:

• Participation in a variety of clinical skills courses across the curriculum.
• Assist in conducting and grading examinations in compliance with the SGU SVM Examination Policy.
• In addition to instruction, scholarship and clinical service can be requested.

Junior Surgery and Anesthesia Laboratory (SAMS 527)

• Assist in surgical instruction of students and supervision of the surgical procedures (neuter or spay).
• Participation in pre- and post-surgical rounds.
• Assessment of student’s clinical performance and medical record writing.

Introduction to Surgical Skills (SAMS 514)

• Laboratory-based clinical instruction of basic surgical skills (i.e., hand ties, suture patterns, draping, gowning, gloving, bandaging etc.)
• Administer clinical skills assessments (i.e., OSCEs).

Instructor for Veterinary Physical Diagnosis (SAMS 515 and LAMS 502)

• Clinical instruction of the examination of a variety of organ systems and methods of evaluation of these systems that are used in general practice.
• Participate in student assessments.
• Facilitate small group discussions with simulated clients.

Research and Scholarly Activities:

• Develop and contribute to extension and continuing education programs, in collaboration with other departments and/or other schools.

Service

Participate in the following University activities:

• Departmental Reviews (when required)
• Faculty Meetings (when required)
• Special Committee Assignments (as assigned by the Dean)
• Outreach efforts in the local community
• Faculty Senate
• Other duties as determined by the Department Chair and/or the Dean

General

Other activities may include but are not limited to the following:

• Assisting in any SGUSVM related outreach clinics (i.e., One Health One Medicine)
• Assist with extracurricular laboratories and events, including but not limited to 6th term Canine and Feline Speuter clinics.
• Establish appropriate opportunities for interaction with students that are consistent with the SVM Faculty Handbook.

Qualifications

• DVM or equivalent degree; MSc or advanced clinical training (i.e., internship) preferable.
• The successful applicant should have excellent interpersonal communication skills, experienced in a clinical teaching facility preferable, and a demonstrated ability to work with others in a collegial team atmosphere

Hours and Travel

• A typical work week is 40 hours Monday through Friday 8 am to 5 pm and includes scheduled employment during the summer outside of the academic calendar.
• Some flexibility in hours is allowed, but the employee must be available during the core work hours between 8 am – 5 pm on campus for in-person classroom/laboratory, diagnostics, and research, otherwise available by email or remote means for meetings.

• This is a full time position in the Caribbean island of Grenada.
